Setting your Goals

Setting goals for things we want and working towards them is an important part of our lives. The path towards our goals may not always run smoothly or be easy, but having goals, whether big or small, is part of what makes life good.

We have covered the topic of How to hit your goals, but have you ever thought how to set them?

Let’s have a look at how you to set SMART goals.

Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Relevant. Time-bound.

Many people set their goals on a regular basis. Take example on high achievers they set their goals and work hard to achieve them. If they can do it so can you!

Ask yourself this question; What do you want ? This is the bottom line in setting your goals.

Let’s put it this way, we spend more time planning for a holiday or a dinner with friends than we spend time thinking what we really want.

About your Goals

Very often people don’t know what they want, however they are always sure of what they don’t want. If this is your case, list down all the things you don’t want. Once you’ve done that, right next to it write down the exact opposite to what you don’t want, which is what you want.

For example, say you don’t want to leave in a flat anymore then your goal would be to move into a house.

Of course you do the list this way as you don’t know what you want. If you already know what you want you straight away right your goals.

Planning Out

How are you going to achieve your goals? Once you have identified your goals, the next step is to make a plan. Set a timeframe for your goals (by when you want to achieve what). By setting deadlines you keep yourself accountable to actually achieve the goal/s you’ve set. You then need to make the plan work. You’ve set your goals and timeline but now is the time do to the actual work to reach them. Just to because you wrote them down, it does not mean they will magically happen on their own. You need the put the work in.

Obstacles

Ever head of ‘nothing good comes easy’, well this can be the case while achieving your goals. It won’t always be a smooth journey but it will definitely be rewarding once you reach your goal. So do not get discouraged if something does not go to plan. It certainly will not happen overnight, it might take weeks, months and in some cases years, but remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. So keep going and don’t give up.

Setting goals that are important to you, and that you are motivated to achieve, will give you the best chance of reaching your goals.
